If you’re interested in spiritualism, prophecy, and alternative scriptures, you may have heard of Oahspe: Oahspe was touted as the New Bible. It was published in 1882 and claimed to contain new revelations from the Creator and his angel ambassadors. But who was the man who wrote this book, and how did he receive these messages?

John Ballou Newbrough (1828–1891) was an American dentist, inventor, and spiritualist who claimed to have received a new revelation from the Creator through automatic writing. Newbrough was born on June 5, 1828, in a log cabin on a farm near Mohicanville, Ohio. He was the fourth of eight children of William and Elizabeth Newbrough. His middle name was after Hosea Ballou, a prominent Universalist preacher and theologian. John showed signs of clairvoyance and clairaudience from an early age, but his father, a strict man, punished him for his spiritual experiences. John was educated in a local schoolhouse and later enrolled in Cleveland Medical College, where he studied medicine and dentistry.
