However, according to new research from Brigham Young University, you may be able to slow one type of aging — the kind that occurs within your cells — by persistent exercising.
In the study, which was published in the medical journal Preventive Medicine, researchers discovered that people who engage in consistent high levels of physical activity have significantly longer telomeres than those who lead sedentary lifestyles, as well as those who engage in moderate levels of activity.
Telomeres are the protein endcaps of our chromosomes that protect them from damage. They function similarly to our biological clock and are extremely correlated with age; each time a cell replicates, we lose a small amount of the endcaps. As a result, the longer we live, the shorter our telomeres become.
